Publication grants
Through the Graduate Center, the University of Passau promotes the publication of excellent qualification theses by granting a publication subsidy in accordance with the Guidelines on the Granting of Subsidies to Promote the Publication of Dissertation and Habilitation Theses. Hereby, the University of Passau fulfills the wish of young scientists to recognize the different publication cultures of dissertations and postdoctoral theses in the different subjects accordingly.
Who can apply for the publication grant?
The publication grant of the University of Passau is aimed at doctoral and post-doctoral students who were predominantly members of the University of Passau during the preparation of their dissertation or post-doctoral thesis. It is either a dissertation that has been evaluated with the highest grade at the University of Passau or a habilitation thesis that has been accepted at the University of Passau. The grant amounts to a maximum of 1,500€.
The grant covers:
- the publication costs not covered and/or
- the uncovered editing costs, if the publication is not in the applicant's native language
The university grant is to be used on a subordinate basis. Other grants are to be used for funding first.
Application
- Even before the publication is printed and up to three months after the publisher has issued the invoice, you can submit an application for publication funding to the Graduate Center office by mail or submit the application online.
- However, the grant will only be paid after the publication has been printed. For this purpose, please submit any evidence that may still be missing (e.g., publisher's invoice).
- The publication must contain the following note: "Published with the financial support of the University of Passau.".

Payment of publication grants
The publication grant can only be paid out to the grantees themselves. A direct payment of the publication grant to the publisher, editing or proofreading service, etc. is not possible!
The path to application
Step 1
Funding criteria
First, take a careful look at the funding criteria and check whether you are eligible for the publication grant.
In order to be eligible for a publication grant from the University of Passau, you must fulfill the following two criteria in particular:
- You were predominantly a member of the University of Passau during the period in which you wrote the dissertation or postdoctoral thesis.
- It is either a dissertation thesis that has been evaluated with the highest grade at the University of Passau or a habilitation thesis that has been accepted at the University of Passau.

Step 3
Financial considerations
The grant covers:
- the publication costs not covered and/or
- the uncovered editing costs, if the publication is not in the applicant's native language,
but not more than 1,500 euros. The grant from the university is to be used on a subordinate basis. Other grants are to be used for funding first.
The Research Services Division team and the Graduate Center will also provide you with further subject-specific information on university and non-university publication funds.
- Application for publication funding,
- confirmation that during the period in which the dissertation or postdoctoral thesis was written, the applicant was predominantly member of the University of Passau (document of acceptance for doctorate/ proof of immatriculation as doctoral student or employment contracts), and
- for dissertations: proof of the thesis evaluated with the highest grade (summa cum laude) or
- in the case of habilitation theses: corresponding (preliminary) habilitation certificate.

An application is possible as an online application or by mail.
You can submit an application for the publication grant to the Graduate Center office even before the publication is printed and up to three months after the publisher has invoiced you.
